中英語：古フランス語から、さらにラテン語の conduct-（「一緒に連れて行く」）に由来し、動詞 conducere から派生。元々は安全な通行のための許可を意味し、「safe conduct」（安全通行証）にその名残がある。後に動詞として「導く、案内する」の意味が生まれ、そこから「管理する」「マネジメント」（中世後期英語）、さらに「自己管理、行動」（16世紀中頃）という意味に発展した。元の形は conduit で、「導管、通路」の意味でのみ残り、他の用法ではラテン語の影響で綴りが変化した。
