contrast
17世紀後半（美術用語として、「形や色の違いを際立たせるために並置する」という意味で）に使われ始めた言葉。フランス語の名詞contraste、動詞contrasterから、イタリア語を経て中世ラテン語contrastareに由来し、ラテン語のcontra-（〜に対して）＋ stare（立つ）から成る。
明確な違い

色や形の違い
