中英語で、要塞や武器の設計者・建設者を指して使われました。初期の用法は古フランス語のengigneorに由来し、中世ラテン語のingeniator、さらにingeniare（考案する、工夫する）から来ています。これはラテン語のingenium（engineを参照）に由来します。後の用法では、フランス語のingénieurやイタリア語のingegnereから来ており、これもラテン語のingeniumに基づき、語尾は- eerの影響を受けています。
