16世紀半ばに「衣服を着せる」「位階の象徴を授ける」「権限を与える」という意味で使われ始めました。フランス語のinvestirやラテン語のinvestireに由来し、in-（〜の中へ、〜の上へ）とvestire（衣服を着せる、vestis＝衣服）が組み合わさっています。17世紀初頭のinvestはイタリア語のinvestireの影響も受けています。
