「part」は古英語のpart（品詞の一部を指す）に由来し、ラテン語のpars, part-から来ています。動詞は中英語で「部分に分ける」という意味で使われ始め、古フランス語のpartir、ラテン語のpartire, partire『分ける、分かつ』に由来します。
