中世後期の英語。古フランス語のpositif, -iveまたはラテン語のpositivusに由来し、これは動詞ponere（置く）の過去分詞形posit-「置かれた」から来ている。元の意味は法律が正式に「定められた」ことを指し、そこから「明確に定められ、疑問の余地がない」、つまり「確実な」という意味が派生した。
