17世紀中頃（「新しい兵士の集団」や「グループの人数を補充する」という意味で）に使われ始めた語。古フランス語の方言 recrute に由来し、これはラテン語の recrescere（「再び成長する」）に基づく。recrescere は re-（「再び」）と crescere（「成長する」）から成る。
