中英語で「（服従を負う）人」の意味で使われた語。古フランス語のsugetから来ており、ラテン語のsubjectus（「下に置かれた」の意）の過去分詞形に由来する。これはsub-（下に）＋jacere（投げる）から成る。哲学、論理学、文法に関する意味は、アリストテレスが使ったto hupokeimenon（「物事が作られる素材」や「属性や述語の主語」の意）に由来する。
