中世後期英語:古フランス語のtrain(男性形)、traine(女性形)に由来し、動詞trahinerから来ている。これはラテン語のtrahere(引く、引っ張る)に由来する。名詞の初期の意味は「ローブの引きずる部分」や「従者の一団」であり、後者から「旅行する人や乗り物の列」、さらに「連結した一連のもの」という意味が派生した。動詞の初期の意味「植物を望ましい形に育てる」が「教える」という意味の基になった。
