中英語の air は古フランス語の air に由来し、さらにラテン語の aer、ギリシャ語の aēr（気体を指す）に遡ります。air はフランス語の air から来ており、おそらく古フランス語の aire（場所、配置）に由来し、これはラテン語の ager, agr-（畑）に由来します（意味1の影響を受けています）。また、air はイタリア語の aria（アリア）からも来ています。
