17世紀初頭（動詞として「衝動を与える」の意味で）に使われ始めた。動詞はラテン語のimpuls-「駆り立てられた」から、名詞はimpulsus「衝動」から来ており、どちらも動詞impellere（impelを参照）に由来する。
