中英語で「かさばる木の塊」という意味。起源は不明だが、重さの概念を象徴している可能性がある。もともと「log」は、水に浮かべて垂直に立つようにした薄い木片を指し、そこからこの装置で得られた情報を記録する「船の日誌」を意味するようになった。
