中世後期英語（「感覚の」という意味）に由来し、古フランス語のsensitif, -iveや中世ラテン語のsensitivusから来ています。これらはラテン語のsentire（感じる）から不規則に形成されました。現在の意味は19世紀初頭から使われています。
